Relationship between apolipoprotein E4 genotype and white matter integrity in HIV-positive young adults in South Africa
HIV-associated dementia (HAD) is a serious neuropsychiatric disorder affecting people with AIDS. Host genotype may affect the pathogenesis of HIV in the central nervous system (CNS). One gene relevant to the individual variation in acquiring HAD may be Apolipoprotein E (ApoE). We aimed to investigate the relationship of ApoE genotype to neuropsychological function and white matter integrity of the corpus callosum in a region of interest a priori analysis of HIV-positive subjects with clade C HIV. Forty-five subjects underwent ApoE genotyping, neuropsychological testing, and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Subjects (n = 24) with at least one ε4 allele when compared to subjects with no ε4 allele (n = 19) had significantly decreased immediate and delayed recall on the Hopkins Verbal Learning test (p = .5) and significantly decreased fractional anisotrophy in the corpus callosum (p = .7). These data indicate that the ε4 allelic variant of ApoE is associated with memory impairment and white matter damage of the corpus callosum in HIV-positive subjects.

White matter fractional anisotropy is inversely related to anxious symptoms in older adults with atherosclerosis
Clinical anxiety disorders are associated with white matter hyperintensities and diffusion abnormalities measured using diffusion tensor imaging. However, it is not known if this association extends into individuals with mild anxious symptoms without formal diagnosis, in those who are older, or i...

White-Matter Damage in Clade C HIV-Positive Subjects: A Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study
The relationship between cognitive impairment and white-matter integrity in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains poorly understood, particularly in clade C. The authors utilized diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation to investigate the relationship ...
Association of microstructural white matter abnormalities with cognitive dysfunction in geriatric patients with major depression
Major depression disorder (MDD) is one of the most common causes of disability in people over 60years of age. Previous studies have linked affective and cognitive symptoms of MDD to white matter (WM) disruption in limbic-cortical circuits. However, the relationship between clinical cognitive defi...
White matter abnormalities and illness severity in major depressive disorder
White matter abnormalities have been implicated in the aetiology of major depressive disorder; however, the relationship between the severity of symptoms and white matter integrity is currently unclear. To investigate white matter integrity in people with major depression and healthy controls, an...
Plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor and prefrontal white matter integrity in late-onset depression and normal aging
To explore the relationship between brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), cerebral deep white matter lesions (DWMLs), and measures of white matter integrity in patients with late-onset depression, with respect to vascular risk factors.MethodWe exa...

Smoking topography and outcome expectancies among individuals with schizotypy
Compared to smokers in the general population, smokers with schizophrenia smoke more cigarettes per day and have higher nicotine dependence and biochemical indicators of nicotine intake. They also have more intense smoking topography and greater positive smoking expectancies. Little is known abou...
Depression, disability and functional status among community-dwelling older adults in South Africa: evidence from the first South African National Income Dynamics Study
This study examined the relationship between depression and functional status among a community-dwelling older population of 65 years and older in South Africa.MethodData from the first wave of the South African National Income Dynamics Study were used, this being the first longitudinal panel sur...
Anemia Associated With Depressive Symptoms in Mild Cognitive Impairment With Severe White Matter Hyperintensities
Depression with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) may be associated with a high risk of dementia. Likewise, anemia and subcortical ischemic changes might be associated with depression in the elderly individuals. We examined the relationship between anemia, subcortical ischemic changes, and depressi...
Causal attributions, pathway to care and clinical features of first-episode psychosis: A South African perspective
Causal belief systems and help-seeking practices may impact on pathway to care and features of first-episode psychosis (FEP) that have prognostic value. This is particularly relevant in South Africa where many people subscribe to traditional belief systems and consult traditional healers. To eval...
Relationship between apathy and diffusion tensor imaging metrics of the brain in Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease (AD) research has largely concentrated on the study of cognitive decline, but the associated behavioral and neuropsychiatric symptoms are of equal importance in the clinical profile of the disease. Apathy is the most common neuropsychiatric manifestation in AD. Clinical, multi...
