Smooth Attachment Devices in Insects: Functional Morphology and Biomechanics

submitted by idesanh 2 years and 5 months ago

In this chapter, I summarise the data collected in the literature on structure and mechanics of smooth attachment pads of insects. The ultrastructure, surface pattern, origin of different smooth pads, and their evolution are described. Results of mechanical testing of their material properties (elasticity, viscoelasticity, adhesion, friction) and basic physical forces contributing to adhesion are discussed. The influence of different factors, such as substrate roughness and stiffness of the pad, on contact forces is shown. Chemical composition of pad fluid, which is an important component of an adhesive function, is reviewed. Such structural features of pads, as anisotropic fibre orientation,.

Locomotion in a sticky terrain
submitted by DandFra 2 years and 2 months ago
The mirid bug Pameridea roridulae lives mutalistically on the protocarnivorous plant Roridula gorgonias. The latter resembles an effective, three-dimensional flypaper trap which captures numerous flying insects. We have recently shown that P. roridulae bugs are not trapped by the plant, because t...

Biological Attachment System of the Pretarsal Pulvilli in the Shield Bug Acanthosoma spinicolle (Heteroptera: Acanthosomatidae)
submitted by lechin 6 months ago
Insects have the distinctive attachment apparatus in their appendages to move on smooth surface using alternatively with sticky fluids or dry adhesion devices. Here, we demonstrated the biological attachment system of the shield bug A. spinicolle to reveal its fine structural characteristics with...

Two Major Structural Proteins Are Required for Rigid Adult Cuticle Formation in the Red Flour Beetle, Tribolium castaneum
submitted by azlimcapca 6 months ago
The insect exoskeleton or cuticle is a complex extracellular matrix consisting of several functional layers. Cuticular proteins (CPs) and the polysaccharide chitin are the major components of the exo- and endocuticular layers or procuticle. During cuticle tanning (sclerotization and pigmentation)...

Effects of the Novel Polymer Gel LeGoo on Human Internal Thoracic Arteries
submitted by nakipodixy 5 months ago
Established hemostatic devices can injure vessel wall integrity. LeGoo (Pluromed, Woburn, MA), a novel poloxamer gel with reverse thermosensitive properties, is a new device for temporary occlusion of blood vessels. The present study investigated the effects of LeGoo on vascular function and morp...

Morphology and topography analysis of mesoporous titania templated by micrometric latex sphere arrays
submitted by KendCrist 5 months ago
In this work, mesoporous titania is prepared by templating latex sphere arrays with four different sphere diameters at the micrometric scale (φ > 1 μm). The mesoporous titania homogeneously covers the latex spheres and substrate, forming a thin coating characterized by N2adsorption isotherm,...

Gross anatomical features of the tongue, lingual skeleton and laryngeal mound of Rhea americana (Palaeognathae, Aves): morpho-functional considerations
submitted by welsani 1 month ago
The tongue body of Rhea americana is triangular and partially pigmented with each caudo-lateral margin displaying a round, sub-divided lingual papilla. The tongue root is a smooth, non-pigmented tract of mucosa. The tongue body is supported by the paraglossum and distal half of the rostral projec...

In vitro biocompatibility of electrospun and solvent-cast chitosan substrata towards schwann, osteoblast, keratinocyte and fibroblast cells
submitted by niaraindacreni 2 years and 5 months ago
Chitosan or poly(N-acetyl-D-glucosamine-co-D-glucosamine) with a degree of deacetylation of about 85% was fabricated into nanofibrous membranes by electrospinning from 7% w/v chitosan solution in 70:30 v/v trifluoroacetic acid/dichloromethane solvent system. The obtained fibers were smooth withou...

The hormone-responsive R3230AC mammary carcinoma, serially transplantable in Fisher rats, shows striking functional and morphological similarities to the normal mammary gland. We have studied its cellular composition by both light and electron microscopy, employing markers of myoepithelial and ep...
