The authors propose to determine the reliability of metal structures (major pipelines, reservoirs, etc.) at low ambient temperatures in terms of the cold resistance criterion by using the second critical temperature of the ductile-brittle transition. The model takes into account degradation of plastic properties of the material during the structure operation. The results of predicting a fracture temperature of a pressure vessel with an axial cracklike defect correlates with the experimental data.
Cold-formed profiled steel roof sheeting can be directly connected to the top chord of a steel roof truss through self-tapping screws. At ambient temperatures, neither EN 1993-1-8 nor EN 1993-1-3 can be used directly for this type of connection. Besides, no design rules are available in EN 1993-1...
Analysis and reliability assessment of fracturing thin-walled structures is important in engineering science. We focus on numerical analysis of dynamic fracture of thin-walled structures such as pipes and pressure vessels. Instead of using finite element method, we propose meshfree method that ha...
The study of thermal mismatch induced stresses and their role in mechanical failure is one relevant topic to composite materials and electronic packages. An understanding of the nature of the interfacial stresses under different temperature conditions is necessary in order to minimize or eliminat...
We have ascertained the limits of reasonable application of the classical boundary element method for the solution of the antiplane problem of the theory of elasticity in the study of bodies with thin-walled elements of structure and geometry. We have proposed an approach for the regularization o...
Silver (Ag) is regarded as advanced material for metallization purposes in microelectronic devices because of its high conductivity and its enhanced electromigration resistance. Besides the typical use of silicon based substrate materials for device fabrication, thin film metallization on ceramic...
The adoption of the popular laser-flash method at temperatures far below 300 K is restricted by the weak signal-to-noise ratio and the limited spectral bandwidth of the commonly used mercury cadmium tellurite (MCT) infrared (IR) detector used as a non-contacting temperature probe. In this work, a...
Through a detailed case study the authors demonstrate, for the first time, the capability of using advanced modeling techniques to correctly simulate the transient temperature response of a convective flow-based thermal shipper design. The objective of this case study was to demonstrate that simu...
Obtaining accurate thermal properties of biomaterials plays an important role in the field of cryobiology. Currently, thermal needle, which is constructed by enclosing a manually winded thin metal wire with an insulation coating in a metallic sheath, is the only available device that is capable o...
The theoretical developments of a material inelastic and geometric nonlinear analysis by use of the isoparametric spline finite strip method (ISFSM) are presented in a companion paper (Yao and Rasmussen (submitted) [1]). In the present paper, the numerical implementation of the analysis is report...
Developments and advances in fabrication technology have led to a new generation of structural shapes in the composite construction market, among them, the composite sinusoidal-web girder. A sinusoidal-web girder is a built-up I-girder with a thin-walled corrugated web (with a sinusoidal profile)...
