Functional Interferon System Is Required for Clearance of Lassa Virus

submitted by dege2 2 months ago

Lassa virus (LASV) is the causative agent of Lassa hemorrhagic fever (LF) in humans, a deadly disease endemic to West Africa that results in 5,000 to 10,000 deaths annually. Here we present results demonstrating that functional type I and type II interferon (IFN) signaling is required for efficient control of LASV dissemination and clearance.

Comparison of the Biological and Biochemical Activities of Several Members of the Alphaherpesvirus ICP0 Family of Proteins
submitted by rodasistros 2 years and 2 months ago
Immediate-early protein ICP0 of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is an E3 ubiquitin ligase of the RING finger class that is required for efficient lytic infection and reactivation from latency. Other alphaherpesviruses also express ICP0-related RING finger proteins, but these have limited homo...

Genetic Analysis of Complement Component 9 (C9) Polymorphisms with Clearance of Hepatitis B Virus Infection
submitted by yfronq 1 year and 2 months ago
The complement component 9 (C9), a major cytolytic protein in the complement system, plays an important role in the immunological process. However, associations between genetic variations of the complement factor and chronic hepatitis B virus infection still need to be investigated. ...

Cross-Species Analysis of the Replication Complex of Old World Arenaviruses Reveals Two Nucleoprotein Sites Involved in L Protein Function
submitted by oreil 6 months ago
Lassa virus (LASV) causing hemorrhagic Lassa fever in West Africa, Mopeia virus (MOPV) from East Africa, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) are the main representatives of the Old World arenaviruses. Little is known about how the components of the arenavirus replication machinery, i.e....

Early activation of the host complement system is required to restrict central nervous system invasion and limit neuropathology during Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus infection
submitted by rebeccajefferson 2 months ago
Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) is a mosquito-borne RNA virus of the genus Alphavirus, family Togaviridae, that is responsible for sporadic outbreaks in human and equid populations in Central and South America. In order to ascertain the role that complement plays in resolving VEEV-ind...

Innate immunity and neuroinflammation in the CNS: The role of microglia in Toll-like receptor-mediated neuronal injury
submitted by 72796 2 years and 5 months ago
Microglia are key players of the immune response in the central nervous system (CNS) and, being the resident innate immune cells, they are responsible for the early control of infections and for the recruitment of cells of the adaptive immune system required for pathogen clearance. The innate and...

The Multi-faceted Influences of Estrogen on Lymphocytes: Toward Novel Immuno-interventions Strategies for Autoimmunity Management
submitted by incltroflooxac 2 years and 5 months ago
Early studies of the immune system disclosed that, generally, females exhibit stronger responses to a variety of antigens than males. Perhaps as a result of this response, women are more prone to developing autoimmune diseases than men. Yet, the precise cellular and molecular mechanisms remain un...

Transgenic expression of tomato bushy stunt virus silencing suppressor P19 via the pOp/LhG4 transactivation system induces viral-like symptoms in tomato
submitted by tapi 2 years and 5 months ago
During natural infection, the Tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV) silencing suppressor protein P19 is expressed at high levels, which are required for optimum viral pathogenicity and silencing suppression. To date, expression of P19 in transgenic host plants has failed to achieve comparable expressio...

A regulatory polymorphism in interferon-I3 receptor 1 promoter is associated with the susceptibility to chronic hepatitis B virus infection
submitted by tormik97 2 years and 4 months ago
The antiviral cascade triggered by interferon-I3 (IFN-I3) represents a vital event for eradicating hepatitis B virus (HBV) in experimental animals. IFN-I3 signaling is mediated through the ligand binding to IFN-I3 receptor 1 (IFNGR1). Control of IFNGR1 expression level is one of the mechanisms by...

Production of pharmaceutical-grade recombinant aprotinin and a monoclonal antibody product using plant-based transient expression systems

Plants have been proposed as an attractive alternative for pharmaceutical protein production to current mammalian or microbial cell-based systems. Eukaryotic protein processing coupled with reduced production costs and low risk for mammalian pathogen contamination and other impurities have led ma...

Predominant Clonal Accumulation of CD8+ T Cells with Moderate Avidity in the Central Nervous Systems of Theiler's Virus-Infected C57BL/6 Mice
submitted by rodasistros 2 years and 2 months ago
Induction of antigen-specific CD8+ T cells bearing a high-avidity T-cell receptor (TCR) is thought to be an important factor in antiviral and antitumor immune responses. However, the relationship between TCR diversity and functional avidity of epitope-specific CD8+ T cells accumulating in the cen...
