Sprint exercise enhances skeletal muscle p70S6k phosphorylation and more so in women than in men

submitted by wf1321 3 months ago

Sprint exercise is characterized by repeated sessions of brief intermittent exercise at a high relative workload. However, little is known about the effect on mTOR pathway, an important link in the regulation of muscle protein synthesis. An earlier training study showed a greater increase in muscle fibre cross-sectional area in women than men. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that the activation of mTOR signalling is more pronounced in women than in men. Healthy men (n = 9) and women (n = 8) performed three bouts of 30-s sprint exercise with 20-min rest in between. Multiple blood samples were collected over time, and muscle biopsy specimens were obtained at rest and 140 min after the last sprint. Serum insulin increased by sprint exercise and more so in women than in men [gender (g) × time (t)]: P = 0.04. In skeletal muscle, phosphorylation of Akt increased by 50% (t, P = 0.001) and mTOR by 120% (t, P = 0.002) independent of gender. The elevation in p70S6k phosphorylation was larger in women (g × t, P = 0.03) and averaged 230% (P = 0.006) as compared to 60% in men (P = 0.04). Phosphorylation rpS6 increased by 660% over time independent of gender (t, P = 0.003). Increase in the phosphorylation of p70S6k was directly related to increase in serum insulin (r = 0.68, P = 0.004).It is concluded that repeated 30-s all-out bouts of sprint exercise separated by 20 min of rest increases Akt/mTOR signalling in skeletal muscle. Secondly, signalling downstream of mTOR was stronger in women than in men after sprint exercise indicated by the increased phosphorylation of p70S6k.

The effect of high-intensity intermittent swimming on post-exercise glycogen supercompensation in rat skeletal muscle
submitted by olsefi 7 months ago
A single bout of prolonged endurance exercise stimulates glucose transport in skeletal muscles, leading to post-exercise muscle glycogen supercompensation if sufficient carbohydrate is provided after the cessation of exercise. Although we recently found that short-term sprint interval exercise al...

Is sprint exercise a leptin signaling mimetic in human skeletal muscle?
submitted by gonish 8 months ago
This study was designed to determine whether sprint exercise activates signaling cascades linked to leptin actions in human skeletal muscle and how this pattern of activation may be interfered by glucose ingestion. Muscle biopsies were obtained in 15 young healthy men in response to a 30-s sprint...

Calpains, skeletal muscle function and exercise
submitted by MariMalak 2 years and 2 months ago
Skeletal muscle fibres contain ubiquitous (micro-calpain and m-calpain) and muscle-specific (calpain-3) Ca2+-dependent proteases. The physiological roles of the calpains are not well understood, although ubiquitous calpains have been associated with apoptosis and myogenesis and calpain-3 is likel...

Effect of 2-wk intensified training and inactivity on muscle Na+-K+ pump expression, phospholemman (FXYD1) phosphorylation, and performance in soccer players
submitted by iarakom 2 years and 1 month ago
The present study examined muscle adaptations and alterations in performance of highly trained soccer players with intensified training or training cessation. Eighteen elite soccer players were, for a 2-wk period, assigned to either a group that performed high-intensity training with a reduction ...

We investigated the association of the angiotensin converting enzyme gene (ACE) insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism, alone or in combination with the I+-actinin-3 gene (ACTN3) R577X polymorphism, with jumping (vertical squat and counter-movement jump tests) and sprint ability (30 m dash) in non...

Reduction in plasma leucine after sprint exercise is greater in males than in females
submitted by ewanjosef 1 year and 8 months ago
There is a pronounced gender difference in the accumulation of plasma ammonia after sprint exercise. Ammonia is a key intermediate in amino acid metabolism, which implies that gender-related differences in plasma and muscle amino acid concentrations after sprint exercise exist. To study this, thr...

Effects of bicarbonate ingestion and high intensity exercise on lactate and H+-ion distribution in different blood compartments

Lactate (La) and H+-ions are unequally distributed in the blood between plasma and red blood cells (RBCs). To our knowledge there is no data concerning the effects of an oral ingestion of bicarbonate (HCO3−) on repeated high intensity sprint exercise and La and H+ distribution between plasma an...
