Feature-Splitting Internal Merge: Improper Movement, Intervention, and the A/A′ Distinction

submitted by KanyeWil 1 year and 2 months ago

We claim that improper movement is excluded by virtue of Agree failure between a moving element and a finite T as a consequence of “feature-splitting” Internal Merge, which we argue is the most (or at least a very) natural implementation of Chomsky’s φ-feature-inheritance system and Richards’s (2007) value–transfer-simultaneity analysis. This analysis has a number of empirical and theoretical consequences: (i) regarding the explanation of A′-opacity/-transparency intervention effects (Rezac 2003, Carstens 2005); (ii) the possible elimination, or reduction in scope, of the Activity Condition; and (iii) the possible characterization of A/A′-position types solely in terms of categorial features. Moreover, we propose that (iv) the ban on improper movement is, in fact, not universal but is morphologically parameterized (at least) between English and the Bantu language Kilega.

Cystic swellings of the neck
submitted by poloetat 2 years and 5 months ago
Cystic neck swellings in the neck arise from a diverse range of tissues and pathological disorder. The approach to diagnosis relies on a thorough history and an appropriate examination including the internal ENT to exclude an occult primary malignancy. The typical feature of fluctuance is often n...

Intervention effects on NPIs and feature movement: towards a unified account of intervention
submitted by sahamplontotean 2 years and 4 months ago
In this paper, I explore the possibility of understanding locality restrictions on the distribution of Negative Polarity Items (NPIs) as a consequence of covert movement. The present proposal restates Linebarger's Immediate Scope Constraint in terms of morphology-driven checking requirements. The...

Do non-native invasive fish support elevated lamprey populations?
submitted by TannerCor 2 years and 4 months ago
Managing populations of predators and their prey to achieve conservation or resource management goals is usually technically challenging and frequently socially controversial. This is true even in the simplest ecosystems but can be made much worse when predator-prey relationships are influenced b...

Correlation Between Carotid Intimal/Medial Thickness and Atherosclerosis: A Point of View From Pathology
submitted by mahommod 2 years and 3 months ago
A widely adopted surrogate for predicting rates of cardiovascular events involves measure of carotid intimal-medial thickness (CIMT) by B mode ultrasound, a technique available since the mid 1980s. The value of this modality remains in its ability to noninvasively assess cardiovascular risk beyon...

Grammatical feature dissimilarities make relative clauses easier: A comprehension study with Italian children
submitted by JaysoDoug 2 years and 1 month ago
The Relativized Minimality approach to A"2-dependencies (Friedmann et al., 2009) predicts that headed object relative clauses (RCs) and which"questions are the most difficult, due to the presence of a lexical restriction on both the subject and the object DP which creates intervention. We investi...

Hydrodynamic behaviour of coarse bioclastic sand from shelly cheniers
submitted by kothylc234 2 years and 1 month ago
Cheniers from Mont-Saint-Michel bay (France) are coarse shelly sand ridges migrating on the mudflat up to the salt marshes where they accumulate and merge in a littoral barrier. In this macrotidal setting and low wave forcing, the cheniers are rarely submerged. However, they are found to move up ...

On Labeling: Principle C and Head Movement
submitted by mgroceo 2 years and 1 month ago
In this paper, we critically reexamine the two algorithms that govern phrase structure building according to Chomsky (2008). We replace them with a unique algorithm, the Probing Algorithm, which states that the Probe of any kind of Merge always provides the label. In addition to capturing core ca...

First-Rank Symptoms in Schizophrenia: Reexamining Mechanisms of Self-recognition
submitted by kallir 1 year and 11 months ago
Disturbances of self are a common feature of schizophrenic psychopathology, with patients reporting that their thoughts and actions are controlled by external forces, as shown in first-rank symptoms (FRS). One widely accepted explanatory model of FRS suggests a deficiency in the internal forward ...

Geometry and mechanics of the morphogenesis of active membranes on the example of plant trichome cells of the genus Draba L
submitted by AmosHugo 1 year and 11 months ago
The stages of the early morphogenesis of simple (unbranched) and complex (branched) unicellular trichomes are studied in two species of the genus Draba"D. sibirica (Pall.) Thell. and D. daurica DC. The geometry of morphogenesis is estimated by analyzing intraindividual variation of quantitative m...

Intercalation and dynamics of hydrated Fe2+ in the vermiculites from Santa Olalla and Ojen
submitted by kojikovac 1 year and 8 months ago
Although the intercalation of Fe3+ into layered phyllosicilicates"especially into smectites"attracted much attention in the past two decades, the information about Fe2+ loaded phyllosilicates is sparse. Here we present an investigation of the Fe2+ exchanged vermiculites from Santa Olalla and Ojen...
